Andrew Hunt, IIISenior PastorBody of Christ Community ChurchPresident, Community of ONE , CDCahunt57@sbcglobal.netwww.communityofoneindy.orgThat they may be one even as we are one, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.John 17:18-23 “As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. Protection, Purpose, and Perfection are the three things God wants to share with us for the few moments we have together this morning.Protection Jesus starts off by asking His Father for protection for those that God Himself had given Jesus. In His prayer in the 17th chapter of John verse 14th thru 16 Jesus tells God that He as given the people the very Word of God and that because of this, the very world in which they lived has turned against them. The world hates them because they are no longer of this world, just as He is not of this world. They are not longer in this world but, are in Christ Jesus, Eph 2:19-22 says “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” Yes, they were born into this world, but now they have been “born again” not born of the flesh but born of the very spirit of God. They now share a spiritual birth with Jesus which why He says, they are not of this world, just as I am not of this world. The world hates them because now there has been a transformation in their thinking, they are not conforming anymore to the ways of the world but are being transform by the renewing of their minds as Romans 12:2 tells us. Jesus says do not take them out of the world but protection from the world and the evil one, Satan, that controls it. Satan hates transformation, the world hates transformation, Satan and this world only wants the further deterioration of this world, not transformation. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. They needed to know the truth so that they could be sent back into the world just as Jesus was sent into the world. The world is our mission field, it is our community, it needs to be transformed which is the purpose of our mission and we have be set aside by God Himself to become servants in the service of a Holy God.In the city of Indianapolis there is such a mission, there is such a community, there is such a transformation that is going on and you are a part of it. I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” PerfectionJesus has asked God for our protection as we pursue our mission of transformation. Then Jesus asks God to prepare us for our mission of transformation by preparing us for the very purpose of our life, which is to be set apart for service unto a Holy God. Our unity, our oneness shows an unbelieving world the God sent Jesus.Jesus says, I’m not asking that you sanctify these with your truth which are before me, but that your also sanctify those who are yet to come, those who are yet to believe in me through their word. Jesus knew that this was an extremely divisive world, a world full of prejudice, competition, lust, selfishness, egotism, angry spirits, pride, hate, and war. A divisive world is always a threat to Christians, but we must remember we are no longer of this world, for we have been born again.
